Life's Questions
Biblical principals of raising a troubled teenager
A troubled teenager may be the result of one of many situations:
- Suffering abuse
- Having an addiction to drugs, alcohol, etc
- Prolongued illness
It is also possible the troubled teenager is responding to the brokenness of their parents or guardians
- Dealing with the anger in their parents
- Living with parents who have an addiction or illness
Their living conditions may be unhealthy
- Lack of food
- No heat
- No running water
- Being abused (physically, emotionally or sexually)
Appropriate discipline for a teenager is different than that of a child. Some possible disciplines are
- Discussion with the intent to educate why a certain behavior is wrong
- Allowing your teenager to experience the natural consequences of inappropriate behavior (What was set in motion by their decisions and actions)
Molding a teenager for their adult life may help curtail inappropriate behavior by providing practical living skills to match their maturing mind
- Encouraging open and honest communication
- Demonstrating by example how you respond to disappointment
- Explaining the importance of thinking before acting
- Providing opportunities for your teenager to explore their interests
- Teaching budgetting skills
Most importantly show acceptance and love. People starve for friendships, hugs and acceptance. Happiness is found in the Lord, through relationships and serving in ones gifts.
